Style Notes: Ammonite

Understated, classic and undoubtably timeless, we explore how best to style this Farrow & Ball favourite.

13th July 2021

When talking about Farrow & Ball paint hues, there is one that is mentioned time and time again. Ammonite. Described as a subtle grey tone named after the treasured fossils found on the lovely Dorset coast, Ammonite has found itself in many a home. Its calming qualities and the fact it is the perfect in-between cool and warm tone has naturally made it a classic. It's many people's first choice when it comes to redecorating or repainting, and to us, it's clear to see why.

It's undoubtedly a beautiful hue, but due to its versatile nature, it can leave people a little lost when it comes to styling it. The possibilities and creative control are endless; quite simply, whatever you wish to pair with it, will work gracefully to create a stunning interior. But, if you are happening to be looking for a little bit of inspiration, allow us to gently guide you. Introducing, Style Notes: Ammonite.

Creating a Sleep Sanctuary

keeping it netural

For those who wish to keep their interior stripped back and neutral in nature, then Ammonite is a magnificent choice. Because it isn't too cool or too warm, it works alongside a whole host of other neutral hues. The finish is calm, welcoming and still offers beautiful creative freedom. Wish to introduce some colour further down the line? Ammonite will embrace that as well.

We all know comfort is key, and if you ask us, Soho Home's Garret Chair simply screams it. The soft bouclé texture makes this immediately welcoming, promptly inviting you to make yourself at home with its' cloud-like appearance. We're seeing more and more bouclé, and we know we're a little early, but it will truly be the beloved icon of Autumn this year, so there isn't a better time to invest if you're thinking about it.

As for furniture, the Portobello Painted Shelved Console Table is perfectly at home against an Ammonite painted wall. Add a brass lamp and a delightful bouquet of fresh blooms for added depth and welcoming character. In living spaces and bedrooms, focus on the softer textures. Amara's Velvet Linen Cushion is a stroke of modern luxury, whilst the Knot Cushion is something a little different, and in many cases, the perfect finishing touch. Complete the look with the Melford British Wool Throw in Grey. Cosy and comfortable.

Introducing colour

Every neutral hue welcomes added colour with remarkable ease. In the case of the Ammonite specifically, the additional hue's becoming exciting as they steal the show completely. Ammonite serves as the perfect backdrop, with its calming nature graciously allowing those additional pieces to enjoy all of the attention.

In a bedroom, a light wash of colour works perfectly to carefully keep the space still feeling calm. The Washed Linen Duvet Cover Set from H&M is a wonderful choice. The powder beige colour is gorgeously soft, including an extra touch of warmth to the grey. It's the same with the Palm Vase. The detail and colour are just lovely, especially when paired with some stunning blooms, but certainly won't overwhelm the room if you don't wish for it too.

Art is an essential addition to every home. It's one of the most effortless ways to add unique personality and detail which, again, a shade like Ammonite welcomes. For floral fans, the Hampstead Heath and Flora art print are elegant choices. Both will introduce warmth and detail with ease, and Flora is perfect for those looking for a bright pop. If you're seeking a more subtle stroke of colour, the Nude No.1412 Framed Print is a gorgeous choice, with the pinky tones bringing an instant feminine touch. Or, if you're considering the opposite and looking for something a little moodier, then Neptune's River Thames Embankment Art might just be what your interior needs.

The Metallic Touch

Metallics positively enhance any hue with such remarkable ease. They are such a stunning touch, that can bring either a classic or modern feel to a home depending on how they are styled. We can't help but think that Ammonite is used best when styled with a classic touch. Aged brass is eagerly welcomed and embraced, and if you absolutely wanted to, you could undoubtedly keep everything else neutral, just using metallics to add depth and elegance.

Candlesticks are one of those interior items that are beautiful, but so often missed out when decorating. They're perfect for occupying those spaces you're never quite sure how else to fill. The Heddon Candlestick is a stunning addition to any fireplace or dining table, take it from us. It's the same with the Sampara Storm Lantern. It's exquisitely striking and will produce such a lovely gentle glow.

For something a little more statement, the Linton Traditional Cast Iron Radiator will be such a remarkable feature within your interior, standing alongside Ammonite gracefully. Perfect for those wishing to produce a classic feel in their interior, this is the most magnificent starting point that will be forever adored in your home.

Ammonite is one of Farrow & Ball's most versatile hues, so it is truly no wonder that's is so well-loved. However you choose to style it; it will look just magnificent. It's the perfect introduction to Farrow and Ball paints too. If you're unsure what shade to choose from, we will always recommend Ammonite. It's effortless to use and shows off Farrow & Ball's well-loved quality with remarkable ease.
