Styling Notes: Down Pipe

Statement, daring and beautiful, Down Pipe is the most wonderful addition to any home.

27th July 2021

Down Pipe enjoys the kind of established reputation that any brand designing a product so desperately desires. Despite how well-loved a grey paint is, Down Pipe has the recognisability that Farrow & Ball is undoubtedly famous for. It's rich and dark yet makes for a lovely addition to the home; just ask any of its' cult following.

It's effortless to style as well, honestly. The dark nature of the paint at first can feel slightly overwhelming, and we wouldn't blame you if you did feel that way, but ultimately, that is where the extraordinary power of grey comes in. It's versatile, which automatically allows you the creative freedom to pair it with, quite frankly, whatever your heart desires. A starting point is always handy though, so allow us to show you how we are styling Farrow & Ball's, Down Pipe

Metallic Showstoppers

We've mentioned a handful of times now that Farrow & Ball paints simply welcome metallic details. The extraordinary richness and complexity of the paint make them a magnificent, elegant and eye-catching pair. If you're unsure on colour palettes or even designs, starting with a few metallic accessories, say a mirror atop a fireplace, or a bar cart housing your favourites in a vacant corner or a photo frame holding your dearest memories. The remarkable combination is undoubtedly showstopping; take it from us.

That bar cart we mentioned? Soho Home naturally has a magnificent one. Its gorgeous vintage design will certainly draw the eye, especially when stocked with beautiful glassware and all of your favourites. Another stunning vintage-inspired piece is the Beau Pendant, also from Soho Home. The cut-glass hanging from a brass chain link is a stunning focal point and will make such a gorgeous statement in your home. No home is complete without some fresh flowers, which naturally means you need vases to put them in. The Antiqued Rose Gold Vase is a lovely addition, simple but undoubtedly charming. Lastly, for a decorative touch of luxury, the Mbata Brass Candelabra is just beautiful. A really lovely piece that will positively enhance any space it is styled into.

Comfort is Key

The rich nature of Down Pipe is one of the reasons why it is so widely adored, however, many will feel it is a shade that requires just a touch of softening. With that, we consistently say that comfort is key. Soft textures effortlessly soften a space, all whilst naturally making it feel inviting and cosy too. In the case of Down Pipe, soft textures make such an unbelievable difference, so certainly don't shy away from accessorising with a cushion... or two.

For a stunning statement and graphic design, the Saber Large Velvet Cushion in Gold is a gorgeous choice for your sofa. The detail is remarkable and will look exquisite atop the Cloud Sundae 3 Seater Sofa from Snug. Allow the emerald green to be enhanced magnificently by the grey; the combination is just stunning. For extra comfort (can you ever have too much?), the Edith Pouffe from Cox and Cox is lovely, and in bedroom spaces, the Illana King Sized Bed is perfect with the velvet providing a complimentary cosy feel that is absolutely delightful.

Colour The Way

If you ask us, a grey hue simply welcomes and eagerly embraces the addition of colour. Yellows, reds, blues and greens... whichever hues you carefully pick to create the palette for your home, Down Pipe will be the most perfect backdrop. The beauty of the shade is it also manages to enhance whatever hues you choose to place in front of it. The colours appear richer, and that makes for a wonderfully vibrant interior.

Pink is one of our favourite colours to pair with Down Pipe. The softness and lightness of the pink is the perfect contrast, and the finished look is just beautiful. The Scatter Cushion in Vintage Pink Clever Velvet is the most delightful addition to your sofa or armchair, and the Dusty Rose Stoneware Jugs will look lovely atop a fireplace or a shelving unit. The Tropical Beaded Pink Fabric Wall Art from Oliver Bonas is a really fun addition, guaranteed to catch the eye every time someone enters the room. If you're thinking about a bolder colour, certainly don't hesitate; jewel tones especially look gorgeous against the grey, making the Cox and Cox Velvet Square Floor Cushion such a wonderful choice for a relaxed yet luxurious feel.

The Finishing Touches

No interior is complete without those finishing touches that precisely make all of the difference. It's those little details, so often overlooked, that add the perfect finishing touch and truly make a house feel like a home. For example, wall hooks and furniture knobs; both elevate the room splendidly, all whilst including a personalised touch. We dearly love the Buster & Punch Furniture Knob and the Solid Brass Bee Hook from Cox and Cox for this. Flowers also offer that finishing touch and effortlessly brighten up the room, and we just adore the Peony Knot bouquet from Wild at Heart.
