Styling Notes: Preference Red

Welcome Autumn with this sublime, dramatic red hue from Farrow & Ball.

31st August 2021

It's around this time of year that we may typically find ourselves drawn towards much darker colours for our home. We naturally seek hues that radiate cosiness effortlessly, and these tend to be rich and statement. One of our favourites? Preference Red from Farrow & Ball. Luxurious, delightfully comforting and serene, if there is any paint colour you're considering for the darker seasons, let it be this one.

It's a hue that is so magnificently rich that it introduces such a gorgeous statement to your home. Preference Red remains undoubtedly timeless, with a classic touch that welcomes a complementary interior. At first, the hue may certainly seem intimidating to style, but you'll end up discovering that it's actually quite versatile. It's a truly elegant shade, so allow us to gently guide you on how to beautifully style it in your home.

Keep it Neutral:

Preference Red is so deeply rich and luxurious, meaning you may wish to keep the surrounding interior and decoration neutral in design so as not to overpower or overwhelm the room. The shade is most certainly more than enough on its own so keeping everything else around subtle in colour traditionally makes for a lovely interior. We'd recommend white or even a muted beige hue as these would both stand out superbly against the red.

The Etoile Sofa in Taupe is such a delightful addition to your living room. Preference Red favours a classic and timeless style, and the curved framed and buttoned backrest is perfect to sit alongside the hue. The Beswick Ceramic Stool from Neptune is a unique touch that offers something classically designed, as does the David Stone Effect Bust Planter. It might have been designed for your garden, but the Penshurst Dining Chair actually suits Preference Red beautifully, and we certainly wouldn't criticise you if you decided to bring it indoors.

The rich and sophisticated nature of the paint hue means that it already comes with such an exquisite, luxurious touch, so it's no wonder that it truly sings when paired against other remarkable pieces that further introduce an elegant design. Metallics naturally suit this shade and come with a timeless touch, making them a most delightful pairing that will effortlessly enhance the space.

It doesn't get more luxurious than the Impero 24-Light Chandelier. It will create such a wonderful statement in your home and will truly sit beautifully in your entrance hall or living room. The Cube Side Table in Gold is a gorgeously modern touch, and the Luxe Wire Globe is also a contemporary take on the classic globe design that has become a staple in a stunning decor. Finally, the Senna Lion Candle Holder will be a lovely addition to a fireplace or dining table.

Naturally, if you're inspired by the addition of colour, there are so many that work magnificently well with the rich and deep red. Bringing colour in alongside this paint hue is certainly perfect if you've used it sparingly. Perhaps on panelling, a feature wall or even furniture. Introducing some secondary colour expands your palette with ease, all whilst adding depth and personality into the space.

Farrow & Ball themselves say that Hague Blue is a perfect accompanist to Preference Red. Both are rich and statement and make for an exquisitely refined space, however you choose to use them. For a less permanent addition of colour, but one that is lovely nonetheless, a bouquet is a wonderful choice; The Suki from Bloom & Wild is the perfect uplifting bunch for any room in your home. No living room is complete without a few scatter cushions, and they have always been a delightful way to introduce some more hues to your palette. The Fara Cushions from Vivaraise is a stunning choice for Autumn. Finally, the Pomona Print from Mindthegap is one we just adore. Perfect for a kitchen or dining room, this will most certainly brighten up your walls.
